FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — A detective with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office uncovered an organized retail theft operation spanning Northeast Florida after arresting a suspect known as “The Lego Bandit” following a vehicle pursuit in Fernandina Beach.
Ronald Lorne Tipton faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, organized retail theft, and drug possession after deputies pinned his getaway U-Haul truck against a tree on Sadler Road.

According to a news release from NCSO, Tipton and an organized group targeted stores along State Road 200 in Yulee, stealing more than $3,000 in high-dollar LEGO sets from Target and Walmart before being linked to over $20,000 in stolen merchandise across the region.
The operation involved filling shopping carts with merchandise, exiting through emergency doors to bypass registers, and loading the stolen items into staged vehicles, NCSO said.
Deputies linked Tipton to three separate thefts at the Target store on State Road 200 in Yulee. On Aug. 18 at approximately 8:24 p.m., Tipton allegedly entered the toy department, selected four high-dollar LEGO sets, and walked out through an exit, resulting in a loss of over $900.
A second theft happened on Aug. 26 at approximately 8:02 p.m., when surveillance cameras captured Tipton placing multiple LEGO sets into shopping carts, pushing them out of the store, and loading them into a white Mazda, totaling around $2,500 in combined loss.
On Sept. 12, investigators reported Tipton returned to the store, took five high-priced LEGO sets through a fire exit and fled in a staged vehicle, taking nearly $1,300 in merchandise.

The investigation expanded on Tuesday at the Walmart on State Road 200 in Yulee. Investigators said Tipton entered the store at approximately 3:56 p.m., scouted the toy aisles, left to enter a U-Haul truck staged behind the business, reentered to select 12 LEGO sets, and fled after being confronted by Walmart’s asset protection team.
When a NCSO investigator spotted Tipton on a service road heading toward a former Chick-fil-A building, the investigator positioned their patrol vehicle in front of the U-Haul. As the detective went to open the U-Haul’s driver door to detain Tipton, NCSO said Tipton hit the detective in the left arm with the vehicle’s open door. The U-Haul then drove off erratically toward Sadler Road in Fernandina Beach, weaving through parking lots at Beach Diner and CVS.
A deputy ended the pursuit by pinning the U-Haul against a tree using a patrol vehicle. Fernandina Beach police assisted deputies in taking Tipton into custody alongside a second suspect, Jessica Underwood, who was charged with unrelated drug offenses.

Deputies searching the U-Haul recovered plastic bags containing a white crystalline substance on the passenger-side floorboard, seizing suspected methamphetamine, crack cocaine, and fentanyl. Investigators noted that Tipton has distinctive tattoos on his right arm, including a marijuana leaf, which matched surveillance footage from the store thefts.
Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper commended the investigative work that connected the local thefts to a broader criminal network.
“What may start as a single retail theft can sometimes uncover something much bigger,” Leeper said in the news release. “Our detectives followed the evidence, connected the dots and worked with our law enforcement partners to put a suspect involved in these thefts behind bars. We will continue working with our retail partners and other agencies to hold organized thieves accountable.”
