JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville teen was sentenced to 30 years in state prison this week after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and armed robbery in connection with a fatal shooting near Westside High School last year.
Alex Reddice pleaded guilty to both charges July 28 during a pretrial hearing, reversing his initial not-guilty plea entered after his February 2025 arrest.
Reddice, who was 16 at the time of his arrest, was accused of killing 31-year-old Carlos Alberto Nieves Rivera.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said officers were called to an apartment complex in the 5500 block of Firestone Road — across the street from Westside High School — at about 7:45 a.m. on Feb. 5, 2025, after receiving reports of gunshots.
Officers arrived to find a man between the ages of 30 and 35 dead from a gunshot wound inside one of the apartments, later identified as Rivera. Witnesses told investigators they heard gunshots and saw several people running from the complex; Duval County School Police detained a number of them at the scene.
Westside High School was placed on lockdown for most of that day as police investigated.
Reddice was arrested the following morning, on Feb. 6, 2025, on murder and robbery charges.
