Decisions made in Kornegay case

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla. — Two girls in Columbia County accused of carrying out the premeditated murder of their teenage brother learn their fate.

Misty 'Ariel' Kornegay, 15, and her 11-year-old sister, Nicole, appeared in court Wednesday morning. The girls are accused in the Jan. 5 shooting death of 16-year-old brother, Damien.

The state attorney said Nicole will not face charges and will be released.  Ariel does not face charges at this time. However, charges could be filed by Mar. 12.

The parents, Misty and Keith Kornegay, were not home at the time of the incident. Police charged the parents with child neglect related to the home's conditions and not the shooting. They are out on bond.

The investigations also revealed Ariel would be locked in her room, sometimes roughly three weeks at a time, with just a blanket and bucket.

The state attorney previously decided not to try the girls as adults.

According to reports, State Attorney Jeff Siegmeister may not charge Nicole with any crime and if he does charge Ariel, he recognizes she needs counseling from years of abuse in her home.

Police say Ariel confessed to breaking into her parents' room, loading their gun and shooting Damien.

Since the deadly shooting, Action News has been digging through reports to learn more about the family and to find out why Damien's sisters would allegedly carry out a plot to kill him. The reports detail alleged abuse in the home dating back to 2010.
