Vandals wreak $150K in damage on 220 Riverside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A big development in a booming neighborhood suffered a major setback. Investigators say someone broke into 220 Riverside then broke a water main. There is now $150,000 worth of damage.

There's caution tape and signs everywhere, but investigators say it's difficult to secure a building that's under construction. There are access points from the streets and a stairwell that leads all the way inside that building and Action News had learned that's how vandals made their way in.

Prank or vendetta, the suspects climbed up to the top floor and started a washout.

“Turns out that there was a four-inch fire valve opened on the 6th floor and was likely running for an hour over an hour,” said Susan Camp, director of human resources.

The newly installed insulation, dry wall and floors are all ruined, $150,000 worth of damage, according to Doster Construction, the company hired to help build the property brick by brick.

"That really will set then back quite a bit don't you think?" said neighbor Carolyn Bayles.

Action News had that same question for the construction company, who said they've been working around the clock as it is to get this project done.

It's part of an up and coming pocket of Riverside, a stone's throw away from the new Fresh Market shopping center that's bringing new life to the area.

"I think it's awesome to see all the new growth and for someone to vandalize and cause that much damage I think it's just a lack of something to do," said Erica Davis.

The security guard on hand Monday told the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office he saw four young white males flee the property on foot and bicycles.

Right now, that's all investigators have to try and track them down.

"We hope that they're caught and that nothing else goes on," said Doster.

Construction officials said they're considering ways to secure this building and keep vandals out.
