Video shows flag football team rescue man whose car went into Jacksonville pond

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Video taken Saturday at Blue Cypress Park in Arlington shows a flag football team pull a man and his car out of a pond.

“That was probably the most wild Saturday that we’ve seen in a long time,” Sean Battles said.

He, Zach Thomas, Justin Johnson and Abereon Brown are among those who plunged into the water to save the driver’s life.

“We don’t know who the guy is or nothing like that, but we just came together like we always do and we just wanted to get that guy out of harm’s way,” Battles added.

Battles says one of the team members got into the car from the passenger side to unlock the doors so his teammates could get the driver out.

Johnson and Brown said they didn’t once think about how they were risking their lives for a stranger.

“Just don’t let him die, not right here, not in front of us, and not like that,” Johnson added.

In the ultimate test of teamwork, the men don’t see themselves as heroes.

“Saving him was like a task, but we all came together as one,” Brown explained.

They just want to know the driver will be OK.

“I would love to meet the guy, honestly. Just to let him know that there are people out here who care. Come out here every Saturday. We’ll open our arms to you, no problem,” Battles said.

“Come out here and play football, we’ll put him on a team and treat him like family,” Thomas added.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded Saturday. A spokesperson told Action News Jax Wednesday evening that there were no injuries from the incident.
