City utility JEA warned customers to be on the lookout for higher electric bills after what it called “extreme heat” in Northeast Florida in August.

The heat led to high usage for JEA customers in August after temps rose, prompting customers to run air-conditioning systems longer.

In addition to the warning, JEA officials offered several ways to help customers manage the higher bills.

The utility said options include:

  • Payment extensions: Short-term extensions that provide an additional 10 to 15 days beyond the due date.
  • Payment arrangements: Longer-term installment plans that allow customers to pay balances over time.
  • Financial assistance referrals: JEA works to connect customers with local nonprofit agencies that can assist qualifying families.
  • MyBudget Program: A levelized billing payment option that averages past usage, so bills remain more predictable month to month.

A spokesperson said customers can learn more about bill pay solutions at jea.com/assistance.

For those who would like to help others, contribute to JEA’s Neighbor to Neighbor Fund or directly help a customer through our Guest Pay program.
