Warrant: Clay County man arrested after toddler found unresponsive in hot car

A Middleburg toddler is in the ICU after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said he was found unresponsive in his dad's car.
Deputies say that 2-year-old boy has been in critical condition since he was found on Aug. 20.

The toddler’s father, 28-year-old Abraham Martin, is in jail, charged with aggravated child neglect.

Action News Jax spoke with several neighbors near Martin's parents home, where he was arrested Monday, and at the Madison Commons apartment complex where the child was found.

People in both places shared the same story: They said the 2-year-old somehow got out of the apartment on his own.

"What I heard from [the 2-year-old's] grandma was he took the keys and then he went into the car, and I guess he was locked in there and couldn't get out," said neighbor Jaslynn Morel.

But a portion of the
Clay County Sheriff's Office report could contradict that. It says the apartment "has a single entry/exit door with a chain latch over five feet in height from the floor."

Martin’s account of what happened appears to have been redacted from the report, but this is what he told a 911 dispatcher after he realized his son was missing: “When I woke up from my nap, my door was wide open and [redacted] was gone and I can’t find him.”

The report states the 2-year-old was found unresponsive inside of Martin’s vehicle in the parking lot.

It states the victim was seizing and in severe medical distress, that the child was unsupervised, and the vehicle was parked over 49 feet from the residence.

“It was a pretty big scene,” Morel said. “I didn't know what was happening at all until they put tape all around the neighborhood.”

Action News Jax asked Morel what the child looked like what he was taken to the hospital.

"He wasn't breathing," Morel said.

The Department of Children and Families said it’s also investigating, and that Martin's three other boys are safe with family.

Deputies believe the temperature inside that vehicle was upwards of 105 degrees.
