JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Liam Coen got the chance to introduce himself as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new head coach on Monday.
Coen said Jaguars owner Shad Khan, who introduced him at the news conference, made his dream come true by selecting him to be the team’s next coach.

In Coen’s opening remarks, he said it’s about “players over plays” and that he wants to bring out the best in them. He also said he wants their success to be collaborative and offered up a “DUUUVAL.”
However, Coen told Action News Jax’s Brent Martineau that he, “absolutely will be calling plays.”
During the question and answer portion of the news conference, Coen was asked what made him change his mind to come to Jacksonville from Tampa, where he was the offensive coordinator for the Buccaneers.

Coen said coaching was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up and he did what was best for his family. He said the change in the front office -- the firing of Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke on Wednesday -- didn’t influence his decision.
Khan said the main thing the team needed to address was the quarterback position and their commitment to quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Said that was the fundamental question posed to all candidates and it became clear Coen was the best choice.
Coen said his focus is on the culture and direction the team wants to go -- and how to get there. Then, he will focus on fundamentals and techniques, then get into schemes while continuing to educate and focus on culture and standards.
Khan also gave an update on the team’s search for a new general manager. He said it should be done by the end of February; he wants to get Coen settled in first.
