‘We definitely will have election results tonight’: Senate race underway in Camden County

CAMDEN COUNTY, Ga. — Voters are back at the polls once again in Camden County, Georgia to cast their ballots in a Senate runoff race between incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock and GOP challenger Herschel Walker.

”It was good. No long wait or anything,” said one voter at the East Kingsland Voting Precinct. “Pushed a button and finished.”

”Real fast. In and out,” added another voter, Lily Gushen. “Five minutes.”

Dexter Askin had the same experience. “It went smoothly. No waiting, I mean, right in, right out,” he said.

Neither Georgia Senate candidate secured more than 50% of the vote during November’s general election.

”It happens. Sometimes the game ends in a tie,” Askin acknowledged.

So, voters are back to lock in their candidate.

”Warnock [has] experience. And that means a lot to me,” Askin said.

Another voter differed, adding, “I think Walker’s got some good points that he’ll try to help.”

To guarantee the integrity of this election, Camden County has designated poll watchers from both parties to observe the process.

”They come in and watch basically, to make sure that what we’re doing is accurate and fair,” described Camden County Supervisor of Elections Shannon Nettles.

She says efficiency is also key.

”For Camden County I can speak, and we definitely will have election results tonight,” she assured.

The close race will determine how much power Democrats hold in the U.S. Senate.

Nettles explained there will be three election result updates once polls close. The first will be released, shortly after polls close at 7 p.m., which will include ballots counted from early voting.

About two hours later (at approximately 9 p.m.), a second update will be released which will include counted ballots from today’s in-person voting.

A third update will be released afterward, which will include ballots from voting precincts in rural areas. This accounts for the fact that election officials have to drive the ballots further distances to transport them to the Supervisor of Elections Office so they can be counted.
