What’s next for the proposed Jags stadium renovation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The hype for a revamped Jags stadium and new entertainment district is high right now, but that proposal is a long way from becoming a reality.

That excitement isn’t lost on Jacksonville councilmembers like Ju’Coby Pittman (D-District 8).

“I think the renderings are beautiful. It definitely would set us apart,” said Pittman.

Before the shiny renderings can even come close to becoming a reality, a lot needs to happen.

It will begin with the Jaguars will embarking on an information campaign.

The team will host 14 ‘Huddle Up Jax’ events throughout the month of June in an effort to engage the community on the proposed $2 billion project.

That endeavor kicks off in just four days with the first of more than a dozen events planned to inform the public about the proposal scheduled for June 12th at Strings Sports Brewery.

“I’m thankful that the Jaguars are gonna take their time to listen to the community,” said Councilmember Kevin Carrico (R-District 4).

Carrico said while the team engages with the people of Jacksonville, city leaders will be doing the same.

“At the end of the day the council answers to the community,” said Carrico.

Council President-designate Ron Salem (R-Group 2 At-Large) said he’s already been hearing from many constituents with a wide array of opinions.

“There are people that think that we need to renovate the stadium. It’s at what cost? And there are people that believe not a dime of taxpayer dollars should go to the stadium,” said Salem.

A memorandum of understanding lays out the team’s desired timeline.

It sets a goal of finalizing an agreement with the city by March 2024.

That would be followed by final NFL approval in May of 2024, early construction starting in February of 2025, full construction starting in January of 2026, and wrapping up in July of 2028.

Councilmember Matt Carlucci (R-Group 4 At-Large) said he thinks it’s feasible.

But he and all the councilmembers Action News Jax spoke with Thursday agreed on city leaders, including Mayor-elect Donna Deegan’s incoming administration, shouldn’t be beholden to a set deadline.

“I think we’re best served when we move at a deliberate pace,” said Carlucci.
