Savannah police launch ‘90 days of summer'

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Police in Savannah are working overtime as a result of eight shootings in just 17 hours.

The shootings spanned from Wednesday through Saturday leaving crime scene tape all across the city.

Police say while the number of shootings is high, it’s something they expected calling it the “summer time spike.”

“Warmer temperatures -- people are out, people are going to parties, people are interacting with each other more, and it is human nature to sometimes get upset with each other,” said Officer Barry Lewish, Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department.

Police said they are enacting the “90 days of summer,” asking officers to hold off on vacations so more of them can police the streets.

Officials said they want to be seen in the areas where crime seems to be spiking.
