Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the U.S., which results in hundreds of deaths each year.
St. Johns County Fire Rescue explained that during extremely hot and humid weather, the body’s ability to cool itself is challenged. When heat builds up too rapidly or when too much fluid or salt is lost through dehydration or sweating, the body temperature will rise drastically.
This can potentially cause heat-related illness, which includes heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Below is a diagram provided by St. Johns County Fire Rescue that fully explains the effects of heat on the body. For more information on symptoms of excessive heat exposure, visit the heat safety tips and resources page of the National Weather Service website.
