8 injured in shooting near James Madison University in Virginia

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Eight people were injured after a shooting early Sunday in Virginia near James Madison University, authorities said.

The incident occurred at an outdoor gathering in Harrisonburg at about 2:20 a.m. EDT, WRIC-TV reported. None of the victims suffered injuries that were considered life-threatening, according to the television station.

According to a statement from the Harrisonburg Police Department, someone fired into a crowd, The Associated Press reported.

Victims ranged in age from 18 to 27 and were taken to area hospitals, WRIC reported.

The housing complex where the shooting occurred is near the university, but city spokesperson Michael Parks said no students were injured, WTOP Radio reported.

According to police, the incident was isolated and they do not believe there is any other threat to the community. It was unclear how many shots were fired, according to the television station. Police are investigating if more than one person fired shots, WTVR reported.

No suspects were at the scene and no arrests have been made, according to the AP.
