COLUMBIA, S.C. — A South Carolina women’s prison guard is unemployed and facing criminal charges after authorities say she tried to smuggle prescription stimulant pills into a jail via cereal bar treats.
Marcy Shaffer, 43, is charged with possession of narcotics with intent to distribute, furnishing prisoners with contraband and misconduct in office, WIS-TV reported.
Officials with the South Carolina Department of Corrections confirmed to the TV station that Shaffer was arrested Thursday - and immediately fired - after four 30-milligram amphetamine and dextroamphetamine pills were discovered inside unwrapped Rice Krispies treats that she had placed in a plastic bag and brought into the Camille Graham Correctional Institution.
According to arrest warrants, two more of the pills, commonly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, were discovered in a prescription bottle with Shaffer’s name on it that was not labeled for the Schedule II drugs.
Shaffer faces one to 10 years in prison if convicted of the contraband charge.
