Coronavirus: NYC Mayor Eric Adams tests positive for COVID-19

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Eric Adams tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, his press secretary said.

“This morning, Mayor Adams woke up with a raspy voice and, out of an abundance of caution, took a PCR test that has now come back positive,” Fabien Levy said in a statement. “At this time, the mayor has no other symptoms, but he is already isolating and will be canceling all public events for the remainder of the week.”

Adams is the latest high-profile politician to contract the virus after attending last weekend’s dinner at the Gridiron Club in Washington. At least 67 people, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Attorney General Merrick Garland, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, have tested positive after attending the event, WNBC reported.

Adams, 61, learned about his health status after taking a PCR test, WPIX-TV reported.

The announcement came on Adams’ 100th day in office, WABC-TV reported.

“When I became mayor, I made a simple promise to New Yorkers to ‘Get Stuff Done,’ and we’ve done just that over the last 100 days,” Adams said in a statement.

The mayor was scheduled to attend an official ribbon-cutting event on the Coney Island boardwalk to celebrate the opening of Deno’s Wonder Wheel, according to WABC.

On Saturday, Adams visited Albany to meet lawmakers at the state capital, The New York Times reported.

Levy said that Adams will work remotely while he recovers, WABC reported.
