The memory of George Floyd is being honored in Newark, New Jersey.
Mayor Ras Baraka, filmmaker Leon Pickney and artist Stanley Watts unveiled the bronze statue this week, WNBC reported.
The statue of Floyd, which was commissioned by Pickney, will be outside Newark’s city hall for the next year, WNBC reported.
Floyd was killed when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on Floyd’s neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds, The Associated Press reported. The former officer was found guilty of murder in April. He will be sentenced later this month, CNN reported when he was convicted.
“Mr. Floyd’s death elevated the Black Lives Matter movement, which has resulted in an international response, including protests, police reform measures and the removal of Confederate statues from public parks and racist names from organizations,” city officials said, according to Patch.
