Couric posted a statement on her website saying the diagnosis came on June 21, 2022, which was “the first day of summer, my 8th wedding anniversary,” CNN reported.

“I felt sick and the room started to spin,” Couric wrote. “I was in the middle of an open office, so I walked to a corner and spoke quietly, my mouth unable to keep up with the questions swirling in my head.”

Four days after she got the news, she shared it with her daughters, Ellie, 31, and Carrie, 26, the “Today” show reported.

Couric said her gynecologist reminded her she was due for a mammogram. Her last one was in December 2020. Normally she has the standard mammogram, but because of dense tissue, she also got a sonogram, since the tissue makes it difficult for mammograms to pick up on cancer, CNN reported.

She had a biopsy to confirm the sonogram’s findings.

Couric had a lumpectomy on July 14 and has been undergoing radiation treatments since Sept. 7, the “Today” show reported. She finished the treatments this week. She said that she feels fine other than looking like she’s been sunbathing on parts of her body.

This is not the first time Couric has had a cancer diagnosis in her family.

Her first husband, Jay Monahan, died from colon cancer when he was 42. Her sister died after a pancreatic cancer diagnosis at the age of 54. Her mother and father both had been diagnosed with cancer, and her mother-in-law died from ovarian cancer.

Couric has been a spokesperson for getting colonoscopies since Monahan’s death. She’s now urging women to get their annual mammograms, the “Today” show reported.
