Migos rapper Takeoff killed in Houston shooting

HOUSTON — Rapper Takeoff, one-third of the Atlanta-based trio Migos, was killed and two other people were hurt when gunfire erupted outside a Houston bowling alley after a private party early Tuesday.

Takeoff, 28, whose real name was Kirshnik Khari Ball, died in the shooting, which occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. outside 810 Billiards & Bowling on San Jacinto Street.

Houston PD confirms rapper was victim

Update 4:43 p.m. EDT Nov. 1: Chief Troy Finner of the Houston Police Department confirmed the rapper’s death at a Tuesday afternoon news conference.

The rapper died just outside the doors of the bowling alley, police confirmed.

Finner also said at least two guns were involved in this shooting and he believes the gunman may have been in his 20s but he stressed he wants the investigation to take its natural course and avoid speculation, KHOU-TV reported.

Takeoff was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia and attended Berkmar High School. He began his music career in 2008 in a group with his uncle Quavo, born Quavious Marshall, and cousin Offset, born Kiari Cephus, WSB-TV reported.

Kinner confirmed during the news conference that Quavo was present at the private party Monday night, but he was unable to confirm Quavo’s prozimity to Takeoff at the time of the shooting.

According to WSB, the band formed originally as Polo Club before changing the name to Migos. Their first breakout, “Versace,” dropped in 2013, but the group’s biggest success followed their 2017 album, “Culture.” The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 100 and featured Migos’ first No. 1 single, “Bad and Boujee,” the TV station reported.

Police confirmed to KHOU that the party ended at 1 a.m., but it carried over to 2 a.m. A group of about 40 people congregated outside the bar on the third floor after closing when the shooting began.

Police said the victim was shot in the head or neck, while two other victims were transported to area hospitals via private vehicles, the TV station reported.

A spokesperson with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission told KPRC-TV that if an investigation were to find that the business’ “policies, procedures or practices contributed to the fatal shooting” potential penalties could include a civil fine or a temporary suspension of the establishment’s liquor license.

Offset, who is married to Cardi B, released a solo album in 2019, while Takeoff and Quavo released a joint album “Only Built for Infinity Links” last month, KHOU reported.

Update 8:26 a.m. EDT Nov. 1: Migos rapper Takeoff died in an overnight shooting in Houston, WSB-TV reported Tuesday morning.

The 28-year-old was killed when gunfire erupted outside 810 Billiards & Bowling on San Jacinto Street after a party, multiple sources told the news station. Two other people also were hurt, Houston police said.

Fellow Migos rapper Quavo also was at the party but was not hurt, according to the report.

Police have not released the names of the victims but confirmed that the rappers attended the party, according to KHOU-TV and KPRC-TV.

Original report: One person was killed and two others were hurt when gunfire erupted outside a Houston bowling alley after a party attended by Takeoff and Quavo of the hip-hop trio Migos, police said.

According to KHOU-TV and KPRC-TV, Houston police have not said whether the rappers were involved in the incident or suffered any injuries.

Police said the shooting occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m. after the party at 810 Billiards & Bowling on San Jacinto Street. Officers arrived to find one man, who had been shot in the neck or head, dead at the scene, the news outlets reported.

The department tweeted overnight that two others were taken to hospitals after the shooting. Police have not publicly released the victims’ names.

“We are not releasing an identity of the deceased victim until his family is notified & ID verified by Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences,” the department wrote.

Takeoff, Quavo and Kiari “Offset” Cephus formed the rap group Polo Club, which eventually became Migos, in 2008, WSB-TV reported. The metro Atlanta-based group released their breakout hit, “Versace,” in 2013, according to the news station.
