Mississippi family rides out deadly Easter Sunday tornado in concrete ‘safe room’

MOSS, Miss. — The picture says it all.

The Phillips family of Moss, Mississippi, rode out Easter Sunday’s violent tornado outbreak in a concrete safe room, and it literally saved their lives.

“I was in there about 20 seconds when it hit,” Andrew Phillips told The Associated Press, adding, “The house is gone, everything but the safe room.”

According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, Sunday’s tornadoes claimed 11 lives statewide, injuring many more, Fox News reported.

Phillips, his wife Amber and their two children, ages 2 years and six months, emerged unscathed from the dual-purpose closet after the storm had passed to discover the home they had moved into only weeks earlier had been leveled.

“I’m just going to let the insurance handle it and trust in the good Lord,” Phillips told The AP by phone on Monday, adding, “We’re going to try to come back bigger and better.”
