ASBURY PARK, N.J. — More than a dozen dogs and puppies were removed from the “sweltering” garage of an abandoned New Jersey home Sunday night, authorities said.
One puppy died Tuesday at the Asbury Park residence, NJ.com reported.
Police in Asbury Park called the Monmouth County SPCA after discovering a number of pit bull mix terriers, WNBC reported. Police found no air conditioning in the garage and only one small open window for fresh air, NJ.com reported.
“Upon entry, we found one of the puppies laying lifeless on the hot concrete,” the Monmouth County SPCA wrote on Facebook. That dog was taken to the Garden State Veterinary Specialists Pet Hospital in Tinton Falls, where it died.
The MCSPCA responded to a call Sunday night from the Asbury Park Police Department regarding an abandoned home with more than a dozen dogs and puppies.

According to Monmouth County SPCA Executive Director Ross Licitra, while a necropsy was not yet performed, “all indications point to (it dying from) cruelty,” NJ.com reported.
One female dog was found chained in the backyard of the house, The Journal of Monmouth County reported. The other animals had no access to food or water, the newspaper reported.
Three adult animals were given food and water which they consumed “ravenously,” the Monmouth County SPCA wrote on Facebook.
“It’s hard to say the last time they even had any available,” the agency read.
All of the dogs continue to receive medical care, and one of the animals is in critical condition, WNBC reported.
No one is in custody, police said. Licitra said the homeowner had not been located as of 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, NJ.com reported.
