Operation Summer Rescue: US Marshals recover 11 runaway children in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS — Authorities have recovered 11 runaway children as part of an investigation in New Orleans dubbed Operation Summer Rescue, the U.S. Marshals Service said Wednesday.

According to WDSU and WVUE, during the operation, which began Aug. 1 and ran through September, the USMS Child Unit worked to recover suspected runaways who were considered missing and endangered.

Investigators believe one recovered child, who is 16, participated “in illegal gang activity involving firearms,” the news outlets reported. Marshals also collaborated with Nashville police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation office in New Orleans to recover a 13-year-old girl in Nashville, Tennessee, authorities said.

The probe also resulted in the arrests of multiple suspects, including a man accused of aggravated statutory rape and a woman accused of first-degree murder in the death of her 11-year-old son in Mississippi, according to WDSU and WVUE. Authorities tracked down her two other sons in New Orleans East, the news outlets reported.
