Parents, students give Florida crossing guard emotional Christmas surprise

ORLANDO, Fla. — Parents and students teamed up this week to give an Orlando crossing guard a Christmas surprise she won’t soon forget.

The tears started flowing as soon as the serenade began. A flash mob of students and parents – complete with an acoustic guitar and chorus of carolers – descended upon the intersection that crossing guard Miss Brenda works each morning near the Lake Nona community.

“Y’all gonna make me cry,” Miss Brenda said in shock as the group approached with gift bags and flowers in hand.

Parents at Laureate Park Elementary School banded together to raise money for Christmas gifts for two of the school’s crossing guards who protect their children on their way to class each morning.

“This is on behalf of the entire community,” one parent said as she presented Miss Brenda with a bouquet of flowers and a gift card worth $400. “Thank you for all you do for us and keeping us safe.”

Parents said the money – $800 in total – was collected in a matter of days.

Parents described Miss Brenda as someone who “doesn’t play when it comes to safety” and “is fierce with her whistle!”

Parent Gloria Van Dusen captured the surprise moment on camera.

“Nobody ever did this for me,” the crossing guard said while wiping away tears. “Thank you.”
