On Thursday afternoon, a pedestrian bridge collapsed in Miami, trapping multiple cars underneath. As of Friday at 5 a.m. there have been 6 reported deaths and 9 people transported to the hospital. It is currently a recovery mission only.
Here are a few things you should know about the bridge:
1. The bridge collapsed 5 days after it was placed at FIU.
The pedestrian walkway was built at an off-site location by MCM and moved into place on March 10th. The walkway was set in place on top of two piers which were constructed on-site, according to FDOT.
"I am heartbroken at the news of the collapse of the pedestrian bridge on 8th St and the resulting devastation. We send our deepest condolences to the victims and their families. We are working with the appropriate agencies to assist in rescue efforts." https://t.co/oHpRAhpdyP

2. The bridge was supposed to showcase FIU's expertise in building bridges.
A new construction method was used to speed up completion.
3. The designer, contractor and the Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) are all under contract with FIU.
CNN reported that the bridge cost $14.2 million to build and was designed to withstand the strength of a Category 5 hurricane, and was supposed to last for more than 100 years.
Continuing to monitor the heartbreaking bridge collapse at FIU - so tragic. Many brave First Responders rushed in to save lives. Thank you for your courage. Praying this evening for all who are affected.

4. The 950-ton bridge was intended to keep students safe from the dangerous road way.
The bridge was made to connect FIU with the City of Sweetwater.
5. The bridge was still under construction.
The state of the art bridge wasn't opened to pedestrians yet until 2019.
6. Authorities believe the "stress test" performed was likely a factor in the collapse.
A stress test was performed earlier Thursday and its cables were being tightened when it collapsed.
