Trucking company behind lumber spill has had 46 crashes in 2 years

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department and the Florida Highway Patrol responded Friday afternoon after a lumber truck overturned on Interstate 295 southbound, causing wood to spill onto Interstate 10 westbound.

Action News has learned that the company that owns the truck, Cypress Truck Lines, has been involved in 46 crashes in the last two years. Of those 46 crashes, 20 involved injuries and 2 were fatal.

Earlier this afternoon, the I-10 WB ramp to I-295 SB was blocked and 1 lane on I-295 SB was blocked. As of early Friday evening, all lanes on I-10 WB and I-295 SB were back open and traffic was moving up to speed.

According to FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan, the semi failed to negotiate the curve and speed may be a factor. When the semi tipped, lumber tumbled off of both sides of the truck and below onto I-10.

Three vehicles on I-10 struck the lumber that fell onto the roadway. Bryan said the driver of the semi, identified as 41-year-old Robert Beasley, and the driver of one vehicle on I-10 were taken to the hospital.

A crew is had to remove the lumber from I-10 by hand.
