COLUMBIA, S.C. — Steve Spurrier, former Florida Gators football coach and current South Carolina Gamecocks coach, is retiring effective immediately, Action Sports Jax has learned.
So far, the Gamecocks are winless in the SEC this year. Spurrier resurrected South Carolina's program, but he's known for his time in Gainesville.

An innovator on offense, he made the Gators dominant in the '90s, winning a national championship with the team in 1996. Spurrier also played for the Gators and was a Heisman Trophy winner in 1966.
During his 11 years as Gators coach, Spurrier won six SEC Championships. He was named a 9-time Conference Coach of the Year during his years in the SEC.
Spurrier is 70 years old and has a home in Crescent Beach.
