Nassau County: Distillery, soapery team up to help fight coronavirus

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — A set of businesses in Nassau County are teamed up to help those on the frontline of the fight against the coronavirus.

Roger Morenc told Action News Jax drinks are usually pouring at his distillery, Marlin and Barrel, in Fernandina Beach.

He said COVID-19 has him working overtime to produce alcohol for hand sanitizer.

“There have been just calls after calls for hand sanitizer," Morenc said.

He said instead of spirits they’re making FDA approved hand sanitizer on the assembly line.

The distillery teamed up with Amelia Island Soapery, which created a liquid version to fulfill the local shortage.

The first order for air traffic control centers in Northeast Florida was finished Tuesday.

“Florida Public Utilities, they have line workers, they’re out in the field. Hey need it, they’ve requested it. The sheriff’s department, hospital, large scale entities like that have made requests, “ said Morenc.

The process -- which includes cook time, labeling and delivery – takes hours.

Morenc, an Army veteran, said he considers it his duty.

“Small businesses, they fix small scale problems. We are part of this community. We just felt a sense of purpose and calling,” said Morenc.

The distillery is fulfilling large scale orders before opening up individual sales.
