40+ year educator at Duval County Public School dies at 76

Jacksonville, FL. — Family and friends are celebrating the life of a lifelong Duval County educator today.

Carol Slack passed earlier this month after an accident in her home.

For over 40 years, Slack brought joy to the classroom as an educator for DCPS.

“She taught me discipline and when to behave. There’s a time and place for everything and I think that’s the big thing,” Former student Andrew DeStefano said.

At the age of 76, Slack passed away on January 17, 2021.

“We sat from about 4 o’clock when she got out of surgery until 3a.m. Sunday morning,” Kathleen Campbell said. “Holding her hand, did my bible study with her, prayed with her and was there with her when she passed.”

Campbell was one of slack’s best friends for over 35 years. She described her as a superhero, someone you could go to no matter what.

“I can’t think of anyone that would have an unkind word to say about her.”

Slack retired from Crystal Springs Elementary school in 2010. Today, friends, family and former students paid their respects at Trinity Baptist Church. Slack’s sister, Patty, said when she heard about her sisters passing there were instant tears.

“It’s life changing, literally life changing,” Slack said. “But, the happy memories are what I hold to and if you really have faith, you believe it’s a celebration of life.”

For those who knew Slack best, they say she’ll be remembered for many things: her advocacy for better education, the passion in the classroom and most importantly - her love and care for both her family and her students.

“Carol loved teaching and she loved her commitment to her students,” Terri Brady, President of Duval Teachers Union said. “Carol was pure. When I say pure, she did nothing for herself. She did it for everyone else and that’s what made her heart so big.”
