DUVAL COUNTY, Fla. — Eleven people are without a home Wednesday morning following an apartment fire on Jacksonville’s Westside.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department responded around 1:45 a.m. to the Westgate apartment complex after reports of a structure fire. The apartments are on La Venture Avenue near 103rd Street and Interstate 295.
"I came out and looked, it was engulfed in flames," said resident Lourdes Rodriguez.
Firefighters got the fire under control in about 40 minutes.
The fire left 10 adults and a minor without homes. Surrounding apartments were damaged by smoke and water.
“The actual apartment where the fire was at is a complete loss,” said JFRD Tom Francis. “However, again the adjacent apartment units also sustained damage to what extent to if they are no longer amicable remains unseen.”
Everyone made it out safely. No injuries were reported.
The state fire marshal condemned some of the units. The Red Cross is at the scene to assist the victims.
The state fire marshal is investigating to find what caused of the fire.
