12 things we learned: New details in Cory Sasser murder case

In June, Georgia law enforcement officer Cory Sasser killed his wife, Katie Kettles Sasser, and her boyfriend, John Hall Jr., before killing himself, authorities say.

The state of Georgia released new documents Thursday with new details about what happened the week of the murders:

1. On June 26, Cory Sasser went to his son’s house in Brunswick. They decide to go to dinner at Moondoggy’s in Brunswick — and they ran into Katie Kettles Sasser and John Hall Jr.

The documents state that Sasser saw his estranged wife (Katie) and her new boyfriend (John Hall Jr.) at Moondoggy's. After Sasser and his son left, Bryce Sasser called Katie to tell her that her belongings had been placed in the street in front of the marital residence.

Glynn Police responded and determined that none of Katie’s property had been placed in the street.

2. Sasser called John Hall’s wife to tell her that he saw her husband and his wife together at Moondoggy’s.

The documents say that beginning at 3:29 a.m. Wednesday, Sasser begins searching on his phone about Tolomato Island, where Hall lived.

3. Sasser was near the VA Clinic in Savannah on Wednesday, June 27 — the day before the murders — but didn’t seek treatment.

Instead of seeking treatment at the VA Clinic, he went to Savannah Toyota and traded his 2016 Ford F-150 for a new Tundra.

The Tundra was the vehicle Sasser was reportedly in when he shot himself the next day. Video from the scene showed the brand-new truck — in a driveway — with a temporary license plate.

4. When he bought the new truck, he was seen transferring guns into the new Tundra.

The guns were described in the documents as an “AR-15, a Glock and possibly a hunting rifle.”

5. Later that day, Sasser is located near Hall’s home on Tolomato Island.

Sasser calls a 911 operator on her cell phone and asks her to check an address for him. He says he is lost. While he’s in the area, he searches for “John Hall Jr. Tolamato (sic).

6. Sasser then texted John Hall Jr.’s wife again.

He asked Hall’s wife: “Did he deny it” and Hall’s wife said “Said she came in with her mom. There was a group of them playing trivia.” Sasser texted, “Where is he now” and Hall’s wife responded, “Why?”

7. Sasser then drove to Alabama and spent the night with his sister.

According to documents, Sasser called his attorney and said he was upset that he only got two hours of visitation with his younger son.

8. He left Alabama on the day of the murders and drove east on I-10.

Sasser told his sister that he was going to Mississippi, but he turned around on I-10 and drove east towards Georgia. Late in the morning, he used his phone to visit the web page for Benelli USA, a maker of shotguns.

9. Sasser paid for his funeral and cremation on Thursday, hours before the murders.

The documents say Sasser told Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery and Funeral Home that he would be taking a job overseas.

10. Sasser bought a Benelli shotgun at a shop in Valdosta, Ga.

After searching for a nearby gun shop on his phone, Sasser arrives in south Georgia and purchases a shotgun and ammo at 4:03 p.m. Thursday. He lied on the forms, and no background check was required because he was carrying a Georgia Weapons Carry Permit. He then drove on to Glynn County before going to McIntosh County.

11. Shots are heard on Tolomato Island. Sasser is heard saying “that is what happens when you sleep with another man’s wife.”

A 911 call is placed at 9:39 p.m. Neighbors said that John Hall Jr. was shot several times in front of his residence.

12. At 9:44 p.m., Sasser called his son to say he’d killed his wife and her new boyfriend.

Documents say Sasser then called his sister for 18 minutes. She asked him not to harm himself. He then calls a 911 Director and he says he will turn himself into the McIntosh County Jail.

Officers try to intercept Sasser for an arrest, but he makes it back to his house in Glynn County.

After reaching his driveway, Sasser killed himself with a .40 caliber handgun, the documents said.

Cory Sasser's son Bryce Sasser was fired from the Brunswick Police Department Thursday, according to a Brunswick Police Department Spokesperson. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
