2 women killed, child grazed in shooting on the Northside

JACKSONVILLE, Florida — Two women were killed and a 2-year-old girl injured in a shooting on the Northside.

According to JSO, officers were called to 425 block of Chestnut Drive early Sunday morning.

When police arrived they found one women who was already dead and a second woman injured, who was taken to UF Health Jacksonville, but she died upon arrival.

A 2-year-old was also grazed by a bullet during the shooting. The toddler is expected to be OK.

Latonya Hudson said she knew both the women who were killed. Police identified the victims as 23-year-old Sharnice Wilson and 40-year-old Marquisha Phillips.

Phillips was one of Hudson’s best friends.

"I just had to come out here and see it for myself," said Hudson. "We went out to eat every day for lunch. We woke up, called each other as soon as we got up.”

Police say the victims lived together at the home on Chestnut Drive. They believe the shooters were on foot near railroad tracks behind the home and that after the shooting they ran away down the tracks.

The railroad was shut down while police gathered information. The tracks were filled with evidence tags marking shell casings from the shooting that left friends and family in shock.

Investigators aren't sure why the two women were killed. However, Action News discovered there have been eight burglaries and four aggravated assaults on the street in just the past year.
