3,000 ‘Stop the Bleed' kits purchased for Jacksonville area schools

Action News Jax is getting a look at where bleeding control kits will be placed within local schools.

The Northeast Florida Health Care Coalition purchased 3,000 of the kits for all public schools in 18 counties.

The kits come with a tourniquet, gauze and bandages, and can be used by nearly anyone to stop severe bleeding.

Mass shootings have been the driver behind the kits being placed in workplaces, government buildings and schools.

“We’ve all seen the footage from Stoneman and other calamities,” said Troy Kasting, assistant principal at Creekside High School.

Kasting showed Action News Jax where in the school the kits will be placed.

This includes classrooms, hallways and the weight room. The goal is to make them accessible and place them where injuries frequently happen.

“Your Stop the Bleed kit would be somewhere that is very visible,” he said.

In St. Johns County, kits will be placed next to every Automated External Defibrillator (AED), which there are generally three to four per high school.

The goal would be to eventually place the kits in every classroom.

Administrators and campus law enforcement have already been trained to use the kits. Kasting says teachers and students will soon learn how to use them as well.

Other local districts like Clay and Duval will also benefit from the coalition’s purchase.

Duval County Public Schools is still working on training and implementation of the kits.

A spokeswoman for the district told us, "We are very thankful to the Northeast Florida Regional Coalition, and will continue to work with them to determine a timeline for implementation."
