The American Cancer Society hosts Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® of the First Coast

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The American Cancer Society hosts Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® of the First Coast on Saturday, October 22, at TIAA field with gates opening at 8 a.m. The annual national event, now in its 30th year, is forecasting Jacksonville to surpass its previous 12,000 strong survivors and thrivers walking the 5k route.

According to the American Cancer Society, The Making Strides Movement remains instrumental in funding for the treatment and support of breast cancer patients, survivors, thrivers and caregivers. Touted as one of the nation’s largest breast cancer movements, more than 150 communities across the country will join the Jacksonville event “making strides to end breast cancer as we know it.”

Actress and Jacksonville native, Renee Lawless, best known for her role in hit television series, The Have’s and Have Not’s will be among those walking; only this year, she walks as a survivor. As a member of this “select sorority,” Lawless says that she stands strong with those battling - and surviving - breast cancer, “celebrating the journey as we celebrate the fight.”

Refusing to “give the C word its due,” Lawless, now cancer free, never says she’s had Cancer.

“I was diagnosed with Cancer,” she said. “And now I am renewed; in spirit, in life and in view.”

The most shocking statistic for Lawless remains instrumental in supporting the importance of early detection and treatment.

“Eight-five percent of the one in eight women diagnosed - including myself - will have had zero family history,” she said.

Angry, Lawless “proclaims” Breast Cancer as a non discriminatory diagnosis.

“Forget your family history, she said. “No one is excluded from this diagnosis. "

Cancer free, Lawless encourages others enduring the battle.

“Yes, Breast Cancer is horrible,” she said. “Yes, the treatment is horrific. It’s hell. However, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Lawless underscores the importance of the role the American Cancer Society and “walks like this” play in the ability to be around other women and “rejoice.”

“And mingle, and talk to and enjoy and hug, and love on these women,” she concluded.

Action News Jax Anchor Dawn Lopez will emcee the event complete with live entertainment, a pre-walk stretch, a kid zone, and a photo booth.

Research from the American Cancer Society describes breast cancer as one of the most common type of cancer found in women. Statistics predict that in 2022, almost 300,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. To date, there are no preventable cures for Breast Cancer. However, early detection remains essential for successful treatment.

The American Cancer Society encourages everyone to participate in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, “To celebrate survivors and thrivers, fund the future of breast cancer research and programs, and ensure all women and men have a fair and just opportunity to prevent, find, treat, and survive breast cancer,” they said.
