Attorney, former client sentenced in investment scheme

Amy Newby, 42, was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for mail fraud.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A judge sentenced a Jacksonville attorney and former client on June 16 in connection to an investment scheme.

Amy Newby, 42, was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for mail fraud. According to a Department of Justice news release, Newby's Florida Bar license was suspended for an unrelated forgery, which occurred prior to the investment scheme. She pleaded guilty on Nov. 26, 2013.

Donald Mitchell, 37, was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for conspiracy to commit mail fraud and of wire fraud. He pleaded guilty on Sept. 11, 2013

The judge also ordered a money judgment for the proceeds of the charged criminal conduct. Newby is ordered to pay $85,050 and Mitchell to pay $96,000.

The release also said Mitchell continued to attempt to commit fraud while detained awaiting his sentencing.

According to court documents, Newby and Mitchell devised a scheme to defraud victims between June 2010 and March 2011 by making them believe that Mitchell was a legitimate investor, when he was not.
