Car crashes into trees on Fleming Island; FHP says one person dead

FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. — Shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, a 2005 Ford Escape traveling southbound on US Highway 17 crossed over the median into the northbound lanes.

Florida Highway Patrol says that the Escape then began to rotate counterclockwise. The vehicle crossed all northbound lanes of traffic and onto the east shoulder.

The Ford collided with a ditch and various trees.

FHP reports that the driver, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
