CDC recommends avoiding trick-or-treating this Halloween

The Centers for Disease and Control Prevention is giving families advice on how to safely celebrate Halloween during the coronavirus pandemic.

The CDC recommends avoiding most of the most fun events associated with the holiday.

Activities such as trick-or-treating and attending crowded indoor costume parties or haunted houses are deemed higher risk activities. Health officials suggest avoiding those activities to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

However, the CDC does encourage families to participate in low-risk activities like carving pumpkins, decorating your home or having a “scavenger hunt-style trick-or-treat search” with those who live in your household, rather than going from house to house.

The CDC has also outlined several factors families should consider before gathering for a holiday this fall and winter, such as:

  • The number and rate of COVID-19 cases within the community
  • The location of the gathering (indoor vs. outdoor)
  • The number of people you plan to have at the gathering
  • The behaviors of the attendees before and after the gathering
