The press release says Caleb Butts died of multiple gunshot wounds, Kirkland died of a single gunshot wound and Kimberly Butts died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

GBI says in the release, "While ballistic test and other laboratory examinations are still pending, evidence currently shows that Kimberly Gayle Butts took the lives of Caleb Logan Butts and Jan Elizabeth Kirkland prior to taking her own life."

“Everybody is in shock, and everybody is very worried about what’s going on,” said Sara Crews, a neighbor.

Neighbors told Action News Jax it’s hard to process what happened in their small community.

Investigators said Butts shot and killed her son and mother before killing herself.

GBI said Kirkland’s ex-husband made the gruesome discovery. He said to the 911 dispatcher, “I just walked into my daughter’s house, and there’s three people dead.”

According to a police report, when deputies arrived at the home, they noticed a strong odor of gas from the stove in the kitchen, and the two back burners were ignited.

“She is just a very loving person, very loving,” said Alecia Zimmerman, a family friend. Zimmerman said it all seems unreal.

She said Kimberly Butts loved her son, who had Down syndrome.

Friends told Action News Jax that Kirkland had some recent health issues, and Kimberly Butts was helping take care of her. They said Kimberly Butts was also scheduled for back surgery.
