Cirque du Soleil's Ovo in Jacksonville show brings message of inclusion

After Hurricane Matthew forced Cirque du Soleil to cancel its Jacksonville shows last year, its massive production has returned to Duval County.

Ovo, which means “egg” in Portuguese, is made up of 50 performers that transform into bugs.

When it comes to circus shows, Cirque du Soleil is king, with its insane acrobatics, daring human trapeze, and incredibly talented foot jugglers.

Cirque du Soleil’s publicist Nicolas Chabot calls Ovo a “romantic comedy.”

“One day there's this funky blue fly that arrived with his big egg on his back and kind of disrupts the harmony of the colony and falls in love with a lady bug,” said Chabot.

Action News Jax was there during Wednesday’s rehearsal as performers perfected their choreography.

On stage, the Russian cradle team showed their skills.

“In total we're coming from 20 different countries,” said Chabot.

Another 50 people form part of the crew, making it a total of a 100-person traveling circus.

Action News Jax got a look at wardrobe where a thousand pieces colorful costumes are stored. In all, 19 trucks travel with Cirque du Soleil from city to city.

Chabot said behind the show’s environmental- and nature-filled scenes, there’s a deeper message.

“The nice message behind the show is more about [an] inclusion story, about a community of bugs living together,” said Chabot.

Chabot said more than 2,000 people were expected for opening night.

“I just hope that people are on the tips of their chair for the whole show,” said Chabot.

Ovo will be in Jacksonville through Sunday at the Veteran’s Memorial Arena.
