It’s been weeks since Hurricane Irma battered the Jacksonville area. Clay County Animal Care and Control is still working to fix what the hurricane destroyed.
Workers sent us pictures showing just how high flood waters got during the storm at the Green Cove Springs location.
“I’ve never seen water move so fast and it happened within a matter of 10 minutes and it was coming in the back door,” Clay County Animal Care and Control Director Christina Sutherin said.
Sutherin said the dog kennels were able to be pressure-washed but the cat cave wasn’t as lucky.
“The cat cave, on the other hand because it is an older type house, about 2 feet of the walls had to be cut out. Serve Pro had to come in and dry everything,” she said.
Employees are hoping to install new drywall in the next week or two and then bring the cats back.
They were taken to an offsite housing location in Fleming Island until the shelter is repaired.
Shelter workers say they’re always looking for foster homes, especially now while their cat cave is being worked on.
A petition has been floating around the internet to help get them a whole new shelter. So far there are more than 5,000 signatures.
“It’s still in the works our board is supportive of that it’s just a matter of them finding the property,” she said.
Sutherin said that’s something that she will continue to work on with the commission.
