Clay County neighbors uneasy after woman shot in her driveway

Clay County neighbors are unnerved after a woman was shot in her driveway.

Action News Jax obtained a copy of the incident report. It revealed the woman was shot multiple times, and the Sheriff's Office robbery homicide unit is investigating.

People in the area said this is completely out character for this neighborhood. They hope those responsible are brought to justice.

“When they said that they hadn’t caught him yet we, I mean, automatically kind of got scared, started double locking the doors,” said Virginia Espinoza, a neighbor.

Deputies believe it was an isolated incident and the woman was targeted. A man who asked not to be identified said he was walking his dog when five shots rang out.

“I start ducking and looking,” he said. “Then I hear another five shots from a different handgun.”

He said he took his dog inside and checked on his family. On his way to work, he said, he saw the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

“But I'm not going to stop and stare,” he recalled. “I just kept on driving by and went on to work.” He was disturbed to learn a woman had been shot.

“We have children in his neighborhood, there's elderly people in the neighborhood, and now we have to look out for that?” asked the witness.

This witness isn’t alone.

“I know that things will settle back down,” Espinoza said. “I know the cops will do what they have to do, but it’s still very, very unnerving.”

Anyone with information abut the shooting is asked to contact Clay County Sheriff's Office at 904-264-6512 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477).
