Clay County woman charged with drowning family Chihuahua in pillowcase

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A Middleburg woman was charged with aggravated animal cruelty after police said she killed the family's pet dog by putting it in a pillowcase and drowning it.

Candace Driggers, 32, is accused of placing her 6-year-old child's Chihuahua in the pillowcase, tying it shut, and throwing the animal in a retention pond behind her home.

The incident happened on Sept. 28. Two days later, Driggers was admitted to Orange Park Medical Center and held under a Baker Act.

On Thursday, the Clay County Sheriff's Office went to the hospital and served Driggers with an arrest warrant dating back to the September incident.

Driggers is in the Clay County Jail. Her bond is set at $50,000.
