Clay officials keeping close eye on Black Creek; Heavy rain expected

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — Officials in Clay County are keeping a close eye on Black Creek, which is currently sitting just below flood level.

Officials said with the rain expected in the next coming days they aren't taking any chances.

Emergency Management for Clay County said the heavy rains recently have been 4 to 6 inches above normal and the ground in the area has become very saturated particularly around the southern prong of Black Creek.

Emergency Operations are asking people who live in the area to monitor creek levels and be aware of their low-lying areas in case they need move items to a second floor or move vehicles from driveways or roads that can flood.

Flood stage for Black Creek is 15 feet, and Sunday morning the National Weather Service has recorded water levels at 13 and a half feet.

"For the next three days we're looking at significant rainfall and then on top of that tropical system or whatever is left of that tropical system as it comes through dropping heavier rainfall we're concerned we'll get some decent flooding," Clay County EOC John Ward said.

Homeowners can also sign up for code-red notifications as conditions and emergencies change and develop.
