Cracked, sinking road in Green Cove Springs under repair

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. — Two lanes of Henley Road are barricaded because the road has begun to sink, crack and shift.

“I drove over it when it was caving in about three months ago and you had to hold onto the wheel,” neighbor Bob Farrar said.

The road was expanded from two to four lanes in 2014 and there was a two-year warranty on the road.

Dale Smith, Clay County public works director, said officials have been watching the road for two years when they first began seeing a shift in the barrier wall.

Then in April, they shut it down.

“There started to be a surface disturbance because of the shift and that’s when we shut the road down April 7," Smith said.

So for the last few months, neighbors were wondering what was happening.

“We had to find out the perfect fix. There’s been three different fixes suggested, we finally came up with one we all agreed to,” Smith said.

Smith said workers will be going down about 15 feet and adding lightweight concrete under the road. Until it's fixed, neighbors will still be seeing these barricades

“The problem is night and day, these barrels out here. If you’re not paying attention, you’re going to hit them. They hit them every day,” Farrar said.

Smith said the work to fix the road won’t cost the county because it was under warranty when it started going bad.

He said it could take about four months before the work is finally finished.

Smith said the barricades cost $30,000 a month.

The contracting company said they took over that cost and the traffic maintenance of the road today.
