JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is inviting families to explore creativity together as summer winds down, offering free admission days, workshops, afterschool programs and hands-on activities for children and adults alike.
Programs for kids
The Creative Kids Afterschool Adventure will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m., featuring gallery exploration and art-making for children in grades K through 5 accompanied by an adult. Tickets, which include museum admission, cost $10 per child for members and $15 for future members.
Artful Storytime, geared toward children ages 2 to 6 with an adult, will take place Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and includes storytelling, song and gallery and garden exploration. Tickets are $10 per child for members and $15 for future members, including admission.
Family events
The museum’s Live Music: Summer Residency with Abigail and Andre Gruber continues each Thursday in August from 5 to 7:30 p.m., free with museum admission. The lineup includes bluegrass on Aug. 6, old-time music with square dance instruction on Aug. 13, western swing and honky tonk with two-step instruction on Aug. 20, and traditional country on Aug. 27.
Free Third Thursday offers free admission Thursday, Aug. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Free admission also will be offered Friday, Sept. 4, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., for 904 Day, held in partnership with Bank of America and featuring live music and lawn games.
First Free Saturday provides free admission Saturday, Sept. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Programs for families with older children
A multigenerational workshop, “Expressive Urban Sketches of American Landmarks,” will be held Thursday, Aug. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m. for ages 14 and up. The workshop, which includes materials and museum admission, costs $35 for members and $45 for future members.
“The Art of Portrait Drawing with Artist William McMahan,” for ages 16 and up, will take place Sunday, Sept. 6, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The workshop covers form, proportion and personal style and includes museum admission. Cost is $35 for members and $50 for future members.
