Two killed, two hurt in crash in Green Cove Springs identified

The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the two individuals killed in the crash on Russell Road Wednesday morning.

Kaitlyn Kane, 21, and Troy Livingston, 21, both died in the crash, according to a FHP report released Thursday.

The report says Kane was not wearing a seatbelt and troopers have not determined if Livingston was wearing a seatbelt.

Kane was ejected from the vehicle, the report says.

Both Kane and Livingston were pronounced dead on-scene, the report says

Kane was driving a Honda Accord and Livingston was the passenger in the vehicle, according to the report.

Kane was driving Southbound on Russell Road before veering left into the Northbound lane, on a double solid line, to pass the vehicle in front of her, according to the report.

The report says Kane then veered right to get back into the Southbound lane.

Kane then ran off the road and into the grass shoulder on the right, then veered left to get back onto the road, but continued left across the double solid center line into oncoming traffic, hitting a Chevrolet Van head on, the report says.

The FHP report says alcohol was not involved.

The report says both passengers in the van, Misty Smith, 43, and James Smith, 54, were wearing their seatbelts.

Misty Smith and James Smith were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the report.

Original Story: FHP said Wednesday that two people are dead following an 8 a.m. crash in Green Cove Springs.

The incident happened at the area of 2803 Russell Road and Pine Hollow Road.

Seeing flashing lights and hearing about a fatal crash is sad, but not surprising for families on Russell Road.

Tina Whitley, who has lived in the area for decades, described, “In the last couple years there’s been 4 within 2 miles of this area.”

Troopers said the crash is a result of a head-on collision. A driver and a passenger passing in a no passing zone were killed.

Two others were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Neighbors said they see dangerous driving habits on the road, daily.

“People getting in a hurry, texting and driving, talking on the phone and driving, people not really paying attention,” Greg Burris described.

Nearby homeowners say additional lanes and lighting are needed on the once rural road to accommodate for the area's rapid growth.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office is currently assisting FHP.

CCSO asks that drivers seek an alternate route as the area is completely blocked at this time.

Law enforcement will likely be on the scene for two to three hours.
