CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A man is being questioned by deputies in connection with a shooting early Monday morning at a Kangaroo gas station on Wells Road.
Clay County deputies responded around 3:30 a.m. to a call about shots fired at a Kangaroo Express near Debarry Avenue.
Deputies said the victim was trying to pump gas when a man pulled up beside him in a light-colored vehicle and asked him questions about buying marijuana. They said a third man arrived at the gas station and began talking to the two men.
The victim got into an argument with one of the men. When the situation calmed down, the victim went to pump gas.
The suspect, Lester Washington, drove out of the parking lot onto Wells Road, pointed a gun out the window and fired several shots, deputies said.
"I didn't believe him at first," said Matthew Lane, who said his friend called him to say that someone had shot at him. "And then he told me that he got shot at, someone ran across the Steak 'n Shake over there and kept shooting at him, then ran off."
Video surveillance confirmed the incident, CCSO said.
Deputies found a vehicle matching the description about 20 minutes later, along with the suspect and a witness, on Debarry Avenue. Deputies said shell casings were found in the vehicle and a firearm was also found.
Washington was taken into custody. He is charged with attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
No one was hurt.
