Deputies: St. Augustine man accused of sexually abusing young girl during Hurricane Irma

A St. Augustine man is jail, accused of sexually abusing a child while she was sleeping.

Investigators say the suspect admitted to the attack and said he was high and drunk at the time.

It's unclear how the victim and suspect knew each other. The police report explains the man was in the home with the child when it happened.

The girl is under the age of 12 and the report states that 29-year-old Reginald Williams forced himself on her while she was asleep.

Williams was arrested after police say he sexually attacked a girl under the age of 12.

The girl's identity is being concealed as she is a victim of sex assault. The report said it happened Sept. 10, the night Hurricane Irma hit, at an apartment in St. Augustine.

The victim told her parents Williams attacked her while she was asleep in her bed.

The young girl says Williams offered $20 to touch her inappropriately. When she refused he offered her $100. He left the room frustrated when she would not allow him to touch her

According to the report, he came back to the room an hour later and touched her while she was asleep. After she repeatedly told him to stop, Williams allegedly told the girl to keep quiet.

The young girl told police she confronted Williams the next morning and he said he was "intoxicated and didn't know why he did that."

The victim waited 10 days to tell her parents.

Police say when they confronted Williams, he requested a lawyer and did not make a statement

Action News Jax law and safety expert Dale Carson said if Williams is convicted, the penalty will be harsh.

“He can very well face life in prison. This is a predator’s act to molest someone under the age of 12,” Carson said.

Williams has a lengthy criminal history in St. Johns County, from driving on a suspended license to battery. We went to the address listed for Williams but no one came to the door.

Williams is being held in the St. Johns County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
