Double murder suspect to face St. Johns County judge

ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. — An Alabama double murder suspect will face a St. Johns County judge Tuesday morning.

John Peyton Scott III was arrested on capital murder charges.

He’s accused of killing his 40-year-old girlfriend and her 75-year-old father at their Helena, Alabama home, which is 500 miles from here.

Their bodies were found by her 12-year-old adopted son.

Police alerted the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office that the suspect may be in the area.

Deputies spotted him driving along International Golf Parkway and say he quickly surrendered after they conducted a pit maneuver just outside Buc’ees.

Family friend Linda Elliot describes a tight knit family: “Her and her family were closer than any family I’ve ever encountered. There isn’t anything her dad wouldn’t do for her, so he’s like the rock in the family,”

The Sheriff’s Office said they don’t know why the suspect was in St. Johns County.

Helena law enforcement will now begin the process of extraditing John Scott back to Alabama, where he will face the death penalty.
