Dozens of delayed flights, some cancellations at JIA ahead of Fourth of July weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It is set to be a busy weekend for air traffic over the United States as people head out to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday.

The Jacksonville International Airport expects around 11,000 travelers to fly out of the airport on Friday.

Robert found out his flight back to New Jersey got delayed.

“When you get here early enough that they say, ‘get here an hour and a half, two hours ahead of time, then it’s delayed three hours, yes it would be annoying,” he said.

Many flights across the country have already been delayed or canceled as the airlines struggle with staffing.

Pilots protested outside the airport in Los Angeles Thursday, demanding more money and better schedules.

CivicScience, a market researcher, found that despite the holiday, the number of people planning to fly in the next month has declined for the second week. According to CivicScience, many Americans report changing their plans because of the rise in flight delays and cancellations.

On Friday afternoon around 3:45, FlightAware showed 27 delays at JIA.

A spokesperson for JIA said there were two cancellations, but they had to do with maintenance, not because of crews or weather.

“We were delayed about one hour out of Philadelphia due to storms in the Carolinas,” John McGinty said.

He and Julia McGinty flew in from New Jersey. Despite the slowdown, they’re looking forward to their time in Northeast Florida.

“The trip was fine and we’re super excited to be here,” John McGinty said.

A spokesperson for JIA told Action News Jax Friday afternoon that all the parking lots and garages were open. JIA still suggests people get to the airport two hours before their plane takes off.
