Duval County schools to hire superintendent by 2018

Action News Jax learned Monday that Duval County is hoping to select a new superintendent by late spring of 2018.

Dr. Nikolai Vitti stepped down as head of  Duval County public schools for the top job in Detroit back in May. Dr. Patricia Willis, a veteran educator in Jacksonville, has been serving as interim.

According to the officials with the Jacksonville Public Education Fund, the Duval County school board is developing a request for a proposal to find the company that will conduct a nationwide search for Vitti's replacement.

The school board members will hold a series of community meetings to discuss their new strategic plan as well as the superintendent search. The meetings are scheduled as follows:

  • Monday, November 6, 2017, 6:00 P.M. Terry Parker High School
  • Wednesday, November 8, 2017, 6:00 P.M. Edward White High School
  • Monday, November 13, 2017, 6:00 P.M. Atlantic Coast High School
  • Thursday, November 16, 2017, 6:00 P.M. William Raines High School
