Amazon employee raises security concerns after shooting inside Northside facility

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —

Gun-free zone signs are plastered on the front entrance of the Jacksonville Amazon Fulfillment Center on Pecan Park Road, where police said someone sneaked a gun inside Tuesday.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a woman was killed and a man was hurt in the shooting. Police said the victims worked at the facility and appeared to have known each other.

Investigators have yet to release the victims' identities or their relationship. Investigators wouldn’t say if this was an attempted murder-suicide, but the agency says it’s not an instance of workplace violence.

JSO said no arrests have been made in the deadly shooting inside the facility.

Action News Jax spoke to several employees who were all too scared to be identified out of fear they’d lose their jobs. One woman said she knew something like this was going to happen. Several workers told Action News Jax there’s a lack of security at the facility.

“If there were metal detectors, this wouldn’t have happened,” an anonymous employee said. Employees said they are required to scan their badge to go through a turnstile, have their temperatures checked for COVID-19, and then they are past security. Employees said they are required to go through a metal detector on their way out of the building. “They only check you when you go out to see if you have stolen property,” an anonymous employee said.

This was the second deadly shooting at the facility within three months. In June, Action News Jax reported that a man trying to apply for a job was shot and killed in the parking lot. Police said he was targeted, and two other bystanders were also struck by bullets.

Action News Jax reached out to Amazon through email to confirm what its security procedures are for employees and guests entering and leaving the building. We also asked if it plans to review its procedures or increase security. We are still waiting for a response from the company.
